Hue is a beautiful city, some poets see the city of Hue as a sleeping beauty lies beside the Perfume River which cross the city in smooth seductive curves. On the north bank of Perfume River is the ancient imperial citadel – which was the area for royal family and mandarins in ancient time. On the south bark of the river is residential area of civilians, today, this area is considered as commercial district and French quarter. Royal citadel was built by Gia Long Emperor in 1803 and was completed by Emperor Minh Mang in 1833. Inside the citadel, Dien Thai Hoa (Palace of Supreme Harmony) – the throne room of the Nguyen Kings – remains well preserved until today. The complex history of political, cultural and religious significance of Hue was recognized by UNESCO as World Cultural Heritage Site.
Perhaps, Perfume River is what people mostly talking about when they come to Hue. The river starts from old forest, pass through the city, and through the king valley where all the Nguyen Emperors rest forever. The complex tombs of Nguyen Dynasty, together with the Royal Citadel and Thien Mu Pagpda, are Hue’s greatest attraction. Among the 7 tombs, the most well-known and featuring impressive architecture merit mausoleums that you must visit are Ming Mang’s tomb and Khai Dinh’s tomb. If your journey starts from Hue ancient imperial, toward the south west of Perfume River either by car or by boat, thus, boat is highly recommended as you can enjoy slow stream and colorful colonial-style buildings along the river, you will reach Thien Mu Pagoda before continue toward the King valley. Thien Mu Pagoda (Heavenly Lady Pagoda) is one of the oldest and prettiest religious buildings in the country.
One plus point for Hue is that there are several beaches near the city less than 1 hour drive, you will not be disappointed with Thuan An beach, Lang Co Beach and Cua Dai Beach.
