Ba Be Lake is about 240km from Hanoi, and it is one of the biggest freshwater lakes in Vietnam. The lake was formed 200 million years ago and was surrounded by primary forest. The lake is a part of Ba Ba national park and features geographical science and is a biodiversity reservoir. It takes you about 8 hours of driving to get to Ba Be Lake, but the magnificent scenery will compensate all the weariness.
According to local myth, there was a poor woman, who was saved by a widow’s family, turned out to be a fairy. To thanks the widow’s family for her kindness, the fairy warmed them about an upcoming disaster before she left. The next day, a flood came and destroyed a whole village, which was Ba Be Lake now a day, the house of widow’s family survived the flood and became widow’s island. You can visit the island while kayaking in the lake.
As a part of Ba Be National Park, when you visit Ba Be Lake, you shouldn’t miss the following sightseeing points. Firstly, Dau Dang Waterfall is about 3 km from Ba Be Lake. The water from Nang River flows over a rock cliff that creates a dazzling waterfall. Also, there are several caves around Ba Be Lake: Hua Ma Cave, Na Phong Cave, and Lo Mo Cave. These caves were formed millions of years ago by water erosion, resulting in an incredible subterranean landscape.
Ba Be National Park is the home to many ethnic minority communities such as Dzao and Hmong community. Therefore, homestay is an excellent choice if you want to know more about the local life. You also get to try local food, which is not only delicious but also organic. The dish you should try is grilled fish. The fishes were caught in Ba Ba Lake; the fishes are sprinkled with salt, pepper, chili, and turmeric just enough to harden the skin, and then be grilled on charcoal until their color turns to soft yellow with the aroma of turmeric.
